2025 Outer Banks, NC (OBX): Day 3

Dear Bullis Parents and Community Members,

Today, we returned for a full day of STEM exploration and discovery at Jennette's Pier and the Coastal Studies Institute, building on the learning and experiences we began yesterday.

We welcome you to experience today's adventures through the thoughtful reflections of our 6th-grade bloggers, as well as photos that capture each moment!

We started our day with a delicious breakfast! Next, we went to our first stop, which was Jennette's Pier, where we took a fascinating class on the sounds of the ocean and determined what a healthy ocean sounds like.

Next, we headed to Roanoke Island for a delicious outdoor lunch. We enjoyed some great sandwiches. Afterward, we visited the Coastal Studies Institute, and this is where the magic really happened! The highlight of my day was building ROVs in a friendly competition. It was fun, and it was also a great learning experience. I discovered how magnetic energy works and how it can be used to power these small, but interesting machines.

Overall, it was a perfect day of exploration, food, and learning!

Today, at the Coastal Studies Institute, we built ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) and designed machines that use waves to create renewable energy. It was a fun and educational day, where we got to work with technology and learn how to make energy from the ocean. We learned how ROVs help us explore underwater and how wave energy can be a clean way to power things. It was a great, hands-on experience!

Today was a blast! We started off the day with breakfast at the hotel. Then we headed over to Jennette's Pier. We did three stations: the first one was experiments on water density. Then, we got to listen to the ocean with a hydrophone. Lastly, we learned about carbon dioxide and ocean health. The next place we went to was the Coastal Studies Institute. After that, we had an amazing dinner! We ended the night by hanging out on the beach! We had a great day today!

We started a magnificent part of our journey at Jennette's Pier, where we learned about acidity. We also learned how dolphins use echolocation to communicate in the water. They use screeches, clicks, and clacks. We then went outside on the dock and were actually able to listen to the sounds of the ocean by using a super cool and impressive gadget called a hydrophone. I was so fascinated by just how loud the ocean actually is.

Afterward, we ate sandwiches, cookies, chips, and apples at Roanoke Island and learned some facts about the Native Americans. They used fire while they were fishing in the morning because there wasn't that much light. The fire was the only real light source, so it attracted the fish to come to their boats.

Then, we went to the Coastal Studies Institute and participated in two competitions: ROVs and Wave Electricity Tracking. It was so fun to maneuver them because it taught me more about the way of water.

Finally, we went to dinner and ate really tasty chicken tenders, fries, and vegetables. I have enjoyed this trip so much and am so grateful we had the opportunity to come.

Warmly,

The 6th Grade Team
