2024 Florida Keys & Everglades: Day 1

Hello parents and Bullis community, 7th graders have arrived smoothly in Key Largo! After touchdown, we trekked by bus from Miami Airport to our restaurant in Key Largo, enjoyed a sunset buffet along the gulf, and had our first taste of key lime pie for dessert. Students are all checked into their rooms and have been debriefed on an early rising tomorrow, where we’ll spend the morning snorkeling on the cusp of the third largest coral reef in the world, behind the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Mesoamerica Barrier Reef off the coast of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. We will be sending memorable updates each evening, and we know you’ll anticipate hearing about tomorrow’s adventures through the descriptive writing skills from the kids themselves! Dear parents and Bullis community, Today is Thursday, March 23, and marks the fourth day in Florida. Wow - what a fabulous final day in Key Largo. There must be a Jimmy Buffet song with that title out there somewhere! We had full sun on our snorkeling expedition, right on the cusp of two coral restoration sites that we researched at the MOTE coral rehab facility yesterday. The wind was too strong to head beyond Newfound Harbor, but students spent well over an hour snorkeling! We spotted a Moray Eel (squeals abound!), tracked a nurse shark for about 60 seconds (even louder squeals), and schools of rainbowed parrotfish. We closed the evening with the best-of-the-best seaside dinner, with about half of our students ordering sushi! The grand finale of the evening was a sunset walk on the 7-Mile Bridge; some of our track and field rockstars ran half the bridge...in Crocs! Kids are room-checked and sun-kissed, but have had a blast! Thank you for your support, trust, and partnership on th...

Good morning from the Florida Everglades! Monday, March 20 Seventh graders are tuckered out after a super early start and a busy day exploring the Everglades National Park. We protected our ears with orange earplugs as we zipped through sawgrass marshes on hydroplane boats, came within six feet of massive 13-foot American Alligators, saw dozens of species of birds, and hiked over tropical hardwood hammocks and through freshwater marshes. We ended the evening with a sunset dinner on the beach. The sun popped out at the end of the day, and we're looking forward to another packed day tomorrow dissecting lionfish, practicing snorkeling, and kayaking through mangroves. - Ms. Christin Felt Colton : Today we went on a super-fast and action-packed airboat ride. We went from learning about new animals to speeding through the grass in the span of 10 seconds. We were blasting through the everglades while doing crazy moves like drifting and 180s. We are all thankful for this amazing experi...
