2023 Germany and Czech Republic: Day 8

By Ashley H. '23 The final day of our trip began with biking around the beautiful city of Munich! Our guided tour was phenomenal, as we experienced the culture of Germany by exploring the English Garden. This large park is twice the size of Central Park. Along our route, we stopped at the Eisbach, a man-made river used for surfing. We found this tradition fascinating, learning that the river was first used in 1972 with ironing boards instead of surfboards! We then briefly stopped to take pictures at Temple Monopteros , a gorgeous landmark that overlooks the city and the park. After this liberating morning, our day shifted when we visited the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site . In contrast to our freeing time on the bikes earlier in the day, our experience at Dachau was filled with feelings of confinement and restriction. The weather was fitting and incredibly powerful for the occasion, as it was rainy, windy, and miserably cold. Walking into the camp, I felt an immediate sta...

2023 Germany and Czech Republic: Day 7

By Ryan T. ‘24 Our group began our day with a bus tour on a double-decker bus. This tour gave us a beautiful view of the city of Munich. Our first stop was the Nymphenburg Palace . This Palace is massive and wrapped around the entire property, so everywhere we looked was part of the Palace. We also visited the gardens behind the castle. We visited BMW world  and were able to “test” (sit in/on) a few of the cars and motorcycles. We continued through the city and learned about its history. At 11:00 am, we stopped to view the Town Hall Tower and the famous Munich Glockenspiel, which chimes several times a day. We then stopped at a large shopping mall and got lunch which was a buffet with tons of different options. After a short break to shop, we took the U-Bahn (German subway, like the Metro) to continue our tour on foot. We visited the  White Rose Memorial , which described the underground resistance movement to the Nazi Regime and the tragic murders of university students who ...

2023 Germany and Czech Republic: Day 6

Historic photo of the Nazi rally grounds. We started our day off with a long bus ride to Nuremberg (Nürnberg) to see Zeppelinfeld. This was the infamous Nazi rally grounds, where Hitler gave his speeches. When this area was still in use, High ranking Nazi members, such as Hitler and his board were in the main building, which was lavish and luxurious, while lesser party members would line up in the field (in order of rank). The sheer size of the entire area, which measured roughly 12 football fields, provoked shivers down our spines. Despite being aged and worn, the structure’s grim history still gives off an eerie sensation, and, as a result, debates about whether the structure should remain or be demolished have arisen.  We followed that unsettling visit with a trip to a former Nazi meeting room, which was now a museum. Although the historical artifacts held there were definitely very interesting, the preserved original walls caught my attention. To me, the aged bricks were an art...

Emily W. '24 wrote: Today we spent our day exploring the towns in Prague. The weather is cold, but nothing can stop us from photographing this quaint city's beautiful scenery.  Our first stop was  Prague Castle , where the royal family used to live, as well as where every president of the Czech Republic held their office. It is located on a hill with a view of the entire city. On top of the Castle is a flag showing that the president is in the country right now. If he is leaving, a message will be sent the minute he crosses the border to lower the flag. We then went to the St. Vitus Cathedral, which was definitely stunning. Every wall is decorated with stained glass windows, many depicting Prague's history before the Cathedral's establishment. Since its construction, it has stood here for centuries to witness the history of Prague ever after. After having lunch in the Old Town of Prague, we stayed there to learn about the history of Czech Jews. We recognized their her...
