2023 Florida Keys and Everglades: Day 4

Dear parents and Bullis community,

Today is Thursday, March 23, and marks the fourth day in Florida. Wow - what a fabulous final day in Key Largo. There must be a Jimmy Buffet song with that title out there somewhere!

We had full sun on our snorkeling expedition, right on the cusp of two coral restoration sites that we researched at the MOTE coral rehab facility yesterday. The wind was too strong to head beyond Newfound Harbor, but students spent well over an hour snorkeling! We spotted a Moray Eel (squeals abound!), tracked a nurse shark for about 60 seconds (even louder squeals), and schools of rainbowed parrotfish.

We closed the evening with the best-of-the-best seaside dinner, with about half of our students ordering sushi! The grand finale of the evening was a sunset walk on the 7-Mile Bridge; some of our track and field rockstars ran half the bridge...in Crocs!

Kids are room-checked and sun-kissed, but have had a blast! Thank you for your support, trust, and partnership on this voyage we've had! Your kids are so wonderful!

From Olivia: "We went critter collecting and at first I was hesitant thinking the fish would be squirmy and the crabs would pinch me. But I ended up loving it and I caught many fish by myself. I loved snorkeling; it was one of my favorite parts of the trip. We saw all types of fish from striped to spotted, some of them as big as a bowling ball. We later saw a nurse shark which was much bigger than all the organisms we had seen that day. One of my favorite parts was when I saw an eel with one of my friends and we started screaming and everyone started swimming to the ladder. We were as scared as cats in water. Everyone could not stop talking about how fun it was and how we saw the biggest and smallest fish in the ocean."
