2025 Florida Keys: Day 1
We've arrived safely in Key Largo after a looooong day of travel and adventure in the Everglades. Students viewed the wildlife from airboats, on foot, tram, and even by flashlight during an evening walk to spot nighttime predators in hunting action. It was Gator Nation down here in the Sunshine State!
Please read below as some students describe their experiences in their own words:

Our first day in Florida consisted of many activities, including taking a tram tour through the Everglades National Park. Although the sun beat down on our backs, it was incredible to see the crocodiles, birds, and alligators! When we passed by a crocodile so close it could've snapped an arm or leg off, everybody took memorable photos. The fabulous fish in the crystal clear water swam with passion. As we walked up the tower, it felt as though we were on top of the world. Today was only day one, but we are already excited about the upcoming activities on our trip.

Walking through the Everglades feels like stepping into a living, breathing world where nature reigns supreme. The air is thick with humidity, carrying the scent of damp earth and fresh water, while the occasional rustle of palm fronds hints at unseen creatures moving just beyond sight. Beneath your feet, the bumpy ground supports your steps as you jump from surprise. Trees rise from the shallow water, their tangled roots twisting like fingers, draped in delicate strands of exotic moss. The distant call of an egret echoes across the landscape, blending with the low, guttural bellow of an alligator hidden somewhere in the tall grass. As you move forward, mosquitoes dart past, their alarming bus awakening your ears while a sudden splash in the water reminds you that this untamed wilderness is alive with unseen mysteries. Every step feels like an intimate encounter with the wild, a reminder of the Everglades' untamed beauty and raw, pulsing energy.

We entered the airboat onto the dark, glistening green algae. The airboat submerged like a submarine getting into position. The boat was as fast as the flash as it glided across the fresh river water. The creatures in the wetlands camouflaged in corners and crevasses as we circled around them. Our airboat captain swerved the fast and noisy vessel; it made us gasp a collective "woahhh." This was a fun and educational experience to remember as the group smoothly sailed across the finish line to get back to our destination.
