Middle School Global Studies Discovery Days 2023


Bullis Global Studies Discovery Days are hands-on experiential learning experiences where Middle School students travel and discover the world. Collaboration and growth without grades are the hallmarks of Discovery Days — a time when students and teachers pause their regular school routines for an immersive experience in something new.

In the spring, Middle School students engage in week-long educational trips, which connect to the science curriculum in each grade. This year grade-level trips are to the;

  • Grand Canyon in 6th grade
  • Florida Keys and Everglades in 7th grade
  • Costa Rica in 8th grade
Discovery Days encourage students to take risks, find their passions, ask interesting questions, and face challenges in a non-traditional setting. Students gain knowledge, skills, and values outside the classroom, develop confidence, build stronger relationships, and expand worldviews. The trips further develop communication, creativity, critical thinking, and resourcefulness.

Bullis students and faculty will share their experiences and perspectives in this blog as they explore their destinations and create lifelong memories. We look forward to following their journeys!

2025 Costa Rica: Day 1

Greetings from Costa Rica! It has been quite a day for our 8th grade students! They started with early morning flights, and ended the night working with our phenomenal Global Works Leaders to create community agreements on how to be inclusive, communicate effectively, and make the most of their time here in Costa Rica. The trip is off to a great start, and students are enjoying themselves as they settle into La Fortuna. Here are two first-hand perspectives from our young world travelers about their day and experiences in Costa Rica. Sienna S. reflects: "Today has definitely been a journey! The turbulence on the flight was a bit rocky at times, but we still made it through and I am excited to be here. We stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. Even though it was only chicken, rice, and beans, the food was delicious and very flavorful. Seeing all of the oxen and wildlife made me realize that we are definitely in a foreign environment, and I am very excited to see more....

2025 Florida Keys: Day 1

Hello! We've arrived safely in Key Largo after a looooong day of travel and adventure in the Everglades. Students viewed the wildlife from airboats, on foot, tram, and even by flashlight during an evening walk to spot nighttime predators in hunting action. It was Gator Nation down here in the Sunshine State! Please read below as some students describe their experiences in their own words: Ava N. Our first day in Florida consisted of many activities, including taking a tram tour through the Everglades National Park. Although the sun beat down on our backs, it was incredible to see the crocodiles, birds, and alligators! When we passed by a crocodile so close it could've snapped an arm or leg off, everybody took memorable photos. The fabulous fish in the crystal clear water swam with passion. 2025 Outer Banks, NC (OBX): Day 1

Dear Bullis Parents and Community Members, We've safely arrived in the beautiful Outer Banks! Our day began at the Wright Brothers Memorial, where students enjoyed stunning views and impressed the ranger by asking thoughtful questions and engaging with the history around them. Next, we explored Jockey's Ridge State Park, where students soaked up the sun, explored the rolling sand dunes, and enjoyed friendly games of football and soccer. In the evening, we enjoyed a delicious BBQ dinner (the hush puppies were a huge hit!) and spent time gathering together at the hotel to share laughs and wind down. We're so proud of how our students embraced our first-day adventures with joy!
