2023 Grand Canyon: Day 1

Good evening from Arizona, 6th Grade families and Bullis community members!

Today, Monday, March 20, marked our first day traveling together to Arizona as a 6th-grade class. I asked some of our students to share their observations and experiences of the trip so far. Enjoy!

Talia: Today on our adventure we went to see the Native American castle at Montezuma National park next to Beaver Creek. We also saw very pretty buildings that were made from rock and mud. Next, on our way to Sedona, we noticed that everything was orange so that all of the buildings blend with the rocks around. The houses all fit in with the environment. As we were walking around Sedona, we saw a rock that looked like a Snoopy. The rocks all were red and that was from the chemical weathering. As we were driving to our hotel, the views and the cliffs were so pretty. The snow was on the top of the mountain. It was so spectacular! Finally, we went rock climbing and had a great time!

Vivian: Montezuma Castle is a 4 story Native American house perched precariously on a cliff. Built in the early 1400s, Montezuma Castle was split into two "houses," but the first one was demolished by looters, leaving only a few brick walls. We visited the park, which is near a stream called Beaver Creek. No, not the ski resort! When we saw it, the stream was really overflowing, due to the recent snow and rain Arizona has been getting. Overall, it was an amazing experience, and I certainly learned a lot!

Stay tuned for our update on tomorrow's adventures!
