2025 Outer Banks, NC (OBX): Day 1

Dear Bullis Parents and Community Members,

We've safely arrived in the beautiful Outer Banks! Our day began at the Wright Brothers Memorial, where students enjoyed stunning views and impressed the ranger by asking thoughtful questions and engaging with the history around them. Next, we explored Jockey's Ridge State Park, where students soaked up the sun, explored the rolling sand dunes, and enjoyed friendly games of football and soccer. In the evening, we enjoyed a delicious BBQ dinner (the hush puppies were a huge hit!) and spent time gathering together at the hotel to share laughs and wind down.

We're so proud of how our students embraced our first-day adventures with joy! Please enjoy these photos capturing highlights of our day, along with reflections from our talented 6th-grade student bloggers! We can't wait to share more in the days ahead!

We started out the day by driving to OBX! Bus rides can be very fun when all your friends are there! After a little over five hours, we made it to the Wright Brothers Memorial, where we learned about the life of the Wright Brothers. I got to talk to a park ranger and asked so many questions!

Fun Fact: It took the Wright Brothers over 5 years for their extraordinary ideas to come to life!

Then, we went to Jockey's Ridge, where we played in the sand dunes. Playing in the sand dunes was so much fun! After such a long and exciting day, we couldn't wait to eat our BBQ dinner. Overall, it was such a fun experience, and we can't wait to see what tomorrow has in store for us!

We woke up early, excited to make our way to the Outer Banks. Keeping in mind, we had a long ride ahead, we prepared our devices to entertain ourselves for the 6-hour trip. After hours of snacks, talking, and games, we made it to the Wright Brothers Memorial. We learned about the purpose of the memorial and the impact the Wright Brothers made on our lives. We ran all the way up to the top of the hill (where the actual memorial was), and when we got there, we talked and walked around. The Wright Brothers Memorial was a fun experience, and we learned a lot.

We made our way back to the buses, and after a few minutes, we started our drive to Jockey's Ridge. When we arrived, we moved over to the back patio and learned about the history of Jockey's Ridge. We went up a giant wooden walkway and then up a big sand dune to the beautiful ridge. It felt like another world! We played football and had so much fun.

We left Jockey's Ridge to go eat dinner at High Cotton BBQ. It was pretty good. We talked a lot and ate a lot as well. We boarded the bus to head back to the hotel. This was a great day of fun and memories that we will remember for a long time.

My friends and I departed for the Outer Banks at 7:00 a.m. It was an early morning, but I was very excited to go to the Outer Banks! The bus ride was fun and energetic, and at about 10:30 a.m., we stopped for a quick meal at Sonic. Some of my friends went to Burger King. I went to Sonic and got a delicious soft pretzel. We drove for a few more hours, and finally, at 1:30 p.m., we arrived at the Wright Brothers Memorial and it was a great experience! Then, we went to Jockey's Ridge at about 3:15 p.m., and this was an unforgettable experience! After that, we went out for a yummy BBQ dinner. Overall, day one was a great experience!

After 6 hours of driving, we finally arrived at the Wright Brothers Museum. We waited for a bit and then sat down on the patio. A guide explained to us the significance of this spot. We learned about how each of the boulders represented the start spot of each of the first four flights. We also learned about the reason why they came to Kitty Hawk, even though they were born in Ohio.

Then we went on a walk to where the monument was. We learned about how and why the monument was placed where it is. We learned that it was placed there because the people of Kitty Hawk wanted to make sure that it could be spotted from most places there.

Afterward, we walked up the hill to get to the memorial. When all of us got there, we got to walk around a little and feel the wind on our backs. We walked around the outside of the monument and took pictures on our own with friends. We then took pictures with our groups and proceeded to walk down the hill. Then, we loaded up our buses to head to our next location, Jockey's Ridge.

Warmly,

The 6th Grade Team
