2023 Florida Keys and Everglades: Day 2
Hi Bullis parents and community,
Today, Tuesday, March 21, 7th graders rocked a full day at John Pennekamp State Park, rotating through 3 packed activities: dissecting invasive exotic Lion Fish, kayaking through mangroves (sometimes capsized, sometimes paddling sideways!), and snorkeling off Cannon Beach, where remnants of old shipwrecked cannons lay splattered along the beach path. We arrived at the park at 9:00 am and departed at 4:00 pm, with some pink cheeks and shoulders, but full of giggles and sunny memories.
Tonight, we're staying in Marathon, FL in the Keys. We ate dinner along the water at Robbie's in Islamorada, where kids browsed crafts from local artists, hand-fed 6 ft. Tarapon fish (while fighting off scavenging pelicans!), and ate dinner as the sun dipped into the Gulf.
We're geared up for another awesome day tomorrow!

From Katelyn:"One of my favorite things today was kayaking through the extensive mangroves. The branches and roots jutted out in all different directions and made it difficult to kayak with our long paddles. We were ready to take on the challenge though and went through some narrow strips of water without tipping over, but tipping did happen. Next, we went to Robbie's Dock where we fed tarpons. They were enormous and really horrifying, but we managed to feed them tiny little fish. Soon after, we ate some dinner in a restaurant circled by hungry birds. I had such an extraordinary time and I can't wait to see what adventures lie ahead."
