2023 Costa Rica: Day 5


Bienvenidos Todos! 

It's Wednesday, March 22. This was the fifth day of our journey across Costa Rica, and we had a leisurely ride, making our way toward the Pacific Coast and the beach of Punta Leona.

Two student volunteers created their recaps of our day below, along with some images. Please enjoy!

Lili noted: “Today, we left the hotel after we had breakfast with a beautiful view of exotic birds near the volcano. While the delicious pancakes were a highlight of my day, I also loved watching through the window as we drove through pastures of cows and fields of corn. At one point on our journey, we stopped to buy souvenirs to bring back to our families. I saw many of my peers purchase thoughtful gifts for their parents and siblings with bright smiles on their faces as they thought of giving the bracelets, wallets, T-shirts, and many other surprises to them! We also stopped at a market where we were able to buy traditional delicacies and snacks before crossing a bridge with many wild animals below.”


Kylie authored: “What happened today you may ask? Well, let me set the scene: the bus ride itself was both fun and tiring since there was so much to see, but we also woke up pretty early and the ride was really long, so most of us couldn’t stay awake the whole time. There was this part of our bus ride where the hills looked like they came straight out of a painting. It was truly surreal…honestly, every day in Costa Rica is surreal. We stopped two hours into the drive to get food and ice cream, and then we drove to this bridge where we saw crocodiles. It was on the highway, so it was a little scary for me, personally. After checking into our smaller rooms at the new hotel, we got ready and walked to the beach area. Everyone was so excited —-we all rushed to the water just to swim as far as we could, savoring every moment in the ocean. From riding waves to playing catch in the sand, I think we’d all agree that everyone had a great time here the first night.”

We asked several students if they would be willing to share their photos from the day, and Miles, Georgia, Solai, Chloe, and Anderson generously gave their photos to share, along with Mrs. King and Mr. Giaffoglione.

After a relaxing “down” travel day, we’re anxiously awaiting soaking up the last of the Costa Rican sunlight on the beach tomorrow. With snorkeling and canoe trips, we’ll have lots to share!

Greetings from Costa Rica! It has been quite a day for our 8th grade students! They started with early morning flights, and ended the night working with our phenomenal Global Works Leaders to create community agreements on how to be inclusive, communicate effectively, and make the most of their time here in Costa Rica. The trip is off to a great start, and students are enjoying themselves as they settle into La Fortuna. The turbulence on the flight was a bit rocky at times, but we still made it through and I am excited to be here. We stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. 2025 Florida Keys: Day 1

Hello! We've arrived safely in Key Largo after a looooong day of travel and adventure in the Everglades. Students viewed the wildlife from airboats, on foot, tram, and even by flashlight during an evening walk to spot nighttime predators in hunting action. It was Gator Nation down here in the Sunshine State! Please read below as some students describe their experiences in their own words: Ava N. Our first day in Florida consisted of many activities, including taking a tram tour through the Everglades National Park. Although the sun beat down on our backs, it was incredible to see the crocodiles, birds, and alligators! When we passed by a crocodile so close it could've snapped an arm or leg off, everybody took memorable photos. The fabulous fish in the crystal clear water swam with passion. 2025 Outer Banks, NC (OBX): Day 1

Dear Bullis Parents and Community Members, We've safely arrived in the beautiful Outer Banks! Our day began at the Wright Brothers Memorial, where students enjoyed stunning views and impressed the ranger by asking thoughtful questions and engaging with the history around them. Next, we explored Jockey's Ridge State Park, where students soaked up the sun, explored the rolling sand dunes, and enjoyed friendly games of football and soccer. In the evening, we enjoyed a delicious BBQ dinner (the hush puppies were a huge hit!) and spent time gathering together at the hotel to share laughs and wind down. We're so proud of how our students embraced our first-day adventures with joy!
